About Amy Wechsler

Amy is a lifelong resident of the community. She has been practicing law for 18 years, specializing in criminal defense. She earned her BA at University of Michigan-Dearborn and her JD degree at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She interned at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, assisting in prosecuting misdemeanors at the 36th District Court, and handling Arraignments at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. Amy also interned for the Attorney General’s Office Abuse and Neglect Division, and interned/clerked for a Judge where she assisted in day-to-day court operations.

Amy’s broad range of experience has given her the unique understanding, that there has to be a balance between being tough and being compassionate. It is not the role of the Judiciary to be an extension of the prosecutor’s office or the police department. Likewise, judges are not defense attorneys and they must hold people accountable for their actions. It is imperative that a judge be able to balance both sides, maintain impartiality, and apply the law fairly and in an unbiased manner, with the community in mind. Because the needs of our community are constantly changing, we must have a judge in our court that is willing to adapt to those changing needs, not be set in their ways. Amy has the experience, leadership, and passion to be that judge. It’s time for a fresh start at the 48th District Court.

The 48th District Court covers Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, West Bloomfield Township, Sylvan Lake, Keego Harbor and Orchard Lake.

Amy represents both adults and juveniles with misdemeanors and low-level felonies. She also serves as a court appointed attorney (Guardian Ad Litem), protecting children’s interests in abuse and neglect cases. Amy’s passion is helping her client’s with addictions receive treatment. She is a strong supporter of drug/sobriety treatment court programs, including Veterans Court, for non-violent offenders as an alternative to jail. Currently, the 48th District Court does not participate in any of these highly successful treatment programs.

Amy is also a licensed Real Estate Broker. She is the Owner/Managing Broker of a Commercial Real Estate Company, handling sales and leases of commercial property. She represents landlords, tenants, sellers and purchasers, drafting and negotiating leases and purchase agreements. She also represents development companies, handling site selection and negotiating land acquisitions for Student Housing and Senior Living facilities across Michigan.

Amy has volunteered her time at the Friendship Circle, and is involved in a number of charitable organizations. She is currently helping to spread the life saving opioid/addiction treatment program, Hope Not Handcuffs across Oakland County. This volunteer based program assists local police departments in helping their citizens with addictions receive treatment.
